THE CHALLENGE

"When [our customer] approached us with the challenge of retrofitting the controls in one of their 19 story buildings, we knew that the Spyder 5 would be the perfect solution. The [office building] features a large, built-up air handling unit in the mechanical penthouse, with a hot-deck/cold-deck configuration. The building has 19 floors, each with approximately 30 VAV boxes. These boxes feature a unique hot-deck/cold-deck “dual intake” configuration, which presents some unique challenges. The biggest challenge is that the VAV’s damper and airflow station are located inside the box (and there’s no easy way to extend the shaft outside the box)."

THE SOLUTION

"During our sales efforts, we retrofitted the controls of a few boxes as a “mockup”, and the Spyder VAV classic barely fit (we had to shove the lid on access panel to get it to close). We later removed the Classic Spyder and replaced it with the Spyder 5 - we had room to spare! The second challenge with the building is the shear volume of controllers. The Spyder 5’s master/slave learning features should make it easy to manage our programming, in a scalable way. Finally, the Spyder 5’s pricing model is very competitive, which allows us to present cost-effective solutions."

THE CHALLENGE

"The project is (for a financial intuition). The customer has stated that he wants the latest version VAV controller available. The existing VAV boxes are Envirotec boxes with limited space for a VAV controller. There are 93 VAV boxes in the building."
